The proof of address problem

New arrivals often need a bank account to rent, but need an address to open a bank account. Practical documents that may help include a signed lease, employer letter, government letter, Revenue letter, bank statement from another account, or a letter from the person you are staying with plus their household bill.

Can you open one before arriving?

Some providers may let people who plan to move to Ireland apply before arrival, subject to their rules and documents. The CCPC notes that with some providers you do not need to be resident in Ireland to open a current account and may be able to apply remotely.

Basic payment accounts

If you are legally resident in an EU country, you may be entitled to open a basic payment account. This is designed to provide basic banking access, but banks still need identity and address checks.

Check fees and payment habits

Irish current accounts may have monthly fees, transaction fees or card fees depending on the provider. Compare charges before choosing, especially if you will use the account for rent, wages, direct debits and everyday card payments.

Keep copies of account-opening documents and bank statements. They may become useful proof of address later for Revenue, PPS, tenancy or credit checks.
